Deserted is, at first glance, a simple image. There is a clear juxtaposition of water and earth, fluid and solid, cool and hot. The clouds and the water are soft and life giving. Rain grows crops and oceans feed coastal communities.
A child that is placed inside a box for protection. Water and clouds are put in the box with him. They represent everything that expands, everything that is cool and flowing. Unfortunately, much of the environment around her is harsh and inhospitable. The heat, and the sun scorching the land are realities we are having to contend with already. “Deserted” both refers to the idea of abandonment, and to the barren landscape we are leaving behind for future generations.
